Kolkata Film Industry's Shooting Impasse Ends with Chief Minister's Intervention

The standoff over film, serial, and web series production in Kolkata's entertainment sector concluded on Tuesday after Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee intervened. Following three days of halted work, studios will resume shooting from Wednesday. "All stakeholders - from directors to light boys and sound recordists and hairdressers and spot boys - will act in cohesion as part of an orchestra," veteran director Goutam Ghosh stated at a press conference on Tuesday night.

Film Shooting Resumes in Kolkata

Actor-producer and MP Deepak Adhikari, known by his screen name Dev, expressed gratitude to Banerjee for resolving the deadlock. "She had asked all of us to work as a family while constructively working for reforms in certain existing rules set by the federation of industry associations in the interest of everyone," he said. The directors had been on strike since Monday, while technicians refused to work under a filmmaker banned earlier this month for allegedly breaching norms.

Resolution and Future Plans

A committee will be established to propose reforms in the current rules and guidelines, aiming to make them more practical for everyone involved. Dev mentioned that the new rules are expected by November. "The CM had understood and appreciated our problems. She has left it for us to sort it out. She wanted us to ensure the rights of everyone are protected," Dev added.

Bengali film superstar Prosenjit Chatterjee, who was also present, noted that there had never been any serious conflict but only some misunderstandings. "We are not against one another. The entire issue revolved around securing one's own rights," he said.

Key Discussions and Outcomes

A series of discussions among directors and technicians took place on Tuesday evening after industry representatives met with Banerjee. "Let's resume work. There should not be any more conflict, any more misunderstanding tomorrow," Ghosh said. It was announced that filmmaker Rahool Mukherjee, whose involvement with a project led to a technician walkout, will continue with the film.

Mukherjee had been banned for three months by the federation for allegedly going to Bangladesh to shoot a web series without informing the technicians' guild. He will return to the shooting floor after a week, according to a director.

From big-budget directors to independent filmmakers, everyone cannot have a large number of technicians. Similarly, the wages of technicians and other crew members need consideration, Dev pointed out. A spokesperson from the West Bengal Motion Pictures Artists Forum confirmed that no shooting occurred on Tuesday either.

Bengali superstar Prasenjit Chatterjee, actor-turned-TMC MP Dev, and director Gautam Ghosh, along with minister Arup Biswas, met Banerjee at the secretariat for nearly 35 minutes of talks.

The intervention by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has brought relief to Kolkata's entertainment industry. With plans for new guidelines and a commitment to protect everyone's rights, the industry looks forward to resuming work smoothly.
