A day ahead of the beginning of the monsoon session, Akhilesh Yadav led Samajwadi Party (SP) on Sunday appointed senior party leader and MLA, Mata Prasad Pandey as leader of the Opposition in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

The position of Leader of the Opposition was vacant since SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav was elevated to Lok Sabha and resigned from the State Assembly.

Who Is Mata Prasad Pandey?

The 81-year-old senior Samajwadi Party leader, Mata Prasad Pandey is a popular name among the people of Uttar Pradesh. He represents Itwa of Siddharthnagar district.

Mata Prasad Pandey is a seven-time elected Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA), who has also served as the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly twice.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) made the big announcement through a post on micro-blogging site X, formerly known as Twitter.

Along with the appointment of Mata Prasad Pandey as Leader of the Opposition, the Samajwadi Party announced former state minister and Kanth MLA Kamal Akhtar as chief whip of the Party in the house, and Rakesh Kumar Verma as his deputy whip.
