Kashmir Gets Ready For Historic Assembly Elections: Voters Expect Development, Jobs & Peace

Jammu and Kashmir is on the cusp of a major political shift as it prepares for its first assembly elections in a decade. The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule for the elections, which will take place in three phases: September 18, September 25 and October 1, with vote counting set for October 4.

This marks the first assembly election since Jammu and Kashmir became a Union Territory in 2019, and it follows a prolonged period without local governance.

A Decade of Discontent

For the past ten years, Jammu and Kashmir has been governed by a Centre-appointed Lieutenant Governor, following the dissolution of the State Assembly in December 2018. The region's electorate has been vocal about its frustrations over persistent issues such as unemployment, drug addiction and lack of basic amenities.

As the election approaches, voters are expressing both scepticism and hope. They are keen to see beyond political manifestos and empty promises, demanding tangible improvements in their daily lives.

Basic Needs and Infrastructure in Focus

Among the top priorities for Kashmiri voters are immediate needs including jobs, ration supplies, reliable electricity and clean water. There is also a significant demand for improved infrastructure at educational institutions, support for emerging artists and regulatory reforms in popular tourist areas like Pahalgam. Additionally, many are advocating for the revival of stalled hydroelectric power projects.

Renewed Hope for Democratic Governance

Voters are eager for a government that will address their concerns effectively and provide a platform for direct communication with local representatives.

Bashir Ahmad, a local businessman in Srinagar, emphasized the importance of this democratic process, stating, "Our constitution gives us the right to choose our government. A people's government. The people choose their representatives and send them to the assembly to address their grievances effectively."

Political Dynamics and Anticipations

The ECI's announcement has brought relief to political leaders advocating for an elected government in the region. The BJP, which has demonstrated strong performance in the Lok Sabha elections, is prepared to contest all assembly seats and is confident of forming the next government.

Regional parties like the National Conference (NC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are also gearing up for the election. NC spokesperson Ifra Jan suggested that the BJP was pressured into announcing the polls by a Supreme Court directive.

The outcome of the assembly elections will be crucial for Kashmir's future governance and development. As the region prepares to vote, the focus remains on achieving meaningful change and effective representation. With a decade of political uncertainty behind them, Kashmir's voters are hopeful that this election will pave the way for a governance with renewed vigour.
