Kalyan Banerjee-Jyotiraditya Scindia Lock Horns In Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha experienced multiple disruptions on Wednesday during the Winter Session. This occurred after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee made controversial remarks about Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. Despite Banerjee's apology, the uproar persisted, with Scindia rejecting the apology for what he termed a "personal attack on him and on the women of India."

Banerjee's comments were removed from the record by Speaker Om Birla. The TMC MP apologised to Scindia, but the Union Minister remained firm in his stance. He expressed that while policy criticism is acceptable, personal attacks are not. "Any individual in their lives will not stand compromising with their self-respect," Scindia stated.

Dispute Over Disaster Management Act

The conflict began during a debate on amendments to the Disaster Management Act. Banerjee accused the central government of non-cooperation during COVID-19. However, Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai countered this claim, asserting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had effectively managed the crisis by collaborating with all states.

Rai also accused West Bengal's government of obstructing COVID-19 vaccine transportation through its region. Scindia supported Rai, highlighting India's role as a "Vishwa Bandhu" during the pandemic by aiding countries worldwide.

Parliamentary Proceedings Disrupted

Following Banerjee's personal remarks against Scindia, Speaker Om Birla expunged them from the records. The heated exchange between treasury and opposition benches led to an adjournment. When proceedings resumed, Banerjee apologised again, but Scindia did not accept it.

A Raja, who was presiding over the session, mentioned that both parties had resolved their differences. However, as protests continued from treasury benches, he adjourned proceedings until 5 pm. Upon reconvening, a Samajwadi Party member attempted to speak on a Bill amidst ongoing protests, leading to another adjournment for the day.

"Mr Kalyan Banerjee rose in this House and said sorry," Scindia remarked. He emphasised that members come to Parliament with a sense of self-respect and should be prepared for responses if personal attacks occur.

Despite repeated apologies from Banerjee and attempts to settle matters amicably, tensions remained high in Parliament throughout the day. The incident highlighted ongoing friction between political parties during legislative sessions.
