IRCTC Update: Good News! Indian Railways Launches Major Food Inspection Drive On Long-Distance Trains

According to the report shared by the Hindustan Times, Indian Railways, in conjunction with the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), has commenced rigorous inspections of food quality and service standards on long-distance trains and at railway stations across the country. This initiative, which kicked off on June 14 following directives from the Railway Board, aims to ensure passengers receive safe and satisfactory dining experiences during their journeys.

Recent months have seen a surge in passenger complaints regarding food quality and alleged overcharging by vendors. Responding to these concerns, officials have launched a 15-day inspection campaign focusing initially on onboard catering services within long-distance trains. This effort will also expand from June 24 to cover stationary food outlets at railway stations.

IRCTC Update and Indian Railways

The Western Railway has taken a proactive approach by assembling a dedicated team of 20 inspectors tasked with scrutinizing pantry cars and vendor operations within their fleet of over 60 trains. Notable services under review include those on prestigious trains like the Rajdhani, Vande Bharat, Shatabdi, and Tejas Express.

A senior official from Western Railway affirmed the stringent nature of the inspections, emphasizing checks on meal quality, portion sizes, and the availability of essential amenities like Railneer packaged water. "We are committed to ensuring compliance with hygiene standards and proper service delivery," the official stated.

During these inspections, deficiencies identified in service delivery are meticulously documented. Actions are planned against vendors found violating prescribed norms, including penalties and retraining of catering staff on hygiene protocols and fire safety measures while operating on moving trains.

Key areas of scrutiny encompass the display of menu cards in coaches, the availability of adequate-sized tea cups, and adherence to guidelines concerning the sale of approved packaged drinking water and other perishable food items.
