Indore Administration Advocates for Green Fuels in Local Factories to Boost Air Quality
The Indore district administration has decided to mandate the use of green fuels instead of coal in local factories to enhance the city's air quality. District Collector Ashish Singh instructed administrative staff to survey industrial units using coal and ensure they switch to natural gas and other eco-friendly fuels.

Focus on Industrial Pollution
Officials noted that coal usage in industries is a significant contributor to air pollution in Indore, which has been recognised as India's cleanest city for several years. The District Magistrate also considered relocating furniture manufacturing units outside the city.
Sudhir Gore, communications officer of Clean Air Catalyst, a global alliance focused on improving air quality, commented on the initiative. "Although promoting the use of green fuels is a good step, effective steps should also be taken to stop the severe air pollution caused by vehicles," he said.
Vehicular Pollution and Road Dust
Gore highlighted that vehicular pollution and road dust account for 70 percent of the air quality deterioration in Indore. Industrial pollution contributes 11 percent, while pollution from cooking with fuels like coal, wood, and cow dung cakes adds another 10 percent.
The meeting underscored the need for comprehensive measures to tackle various sources of pollution. Ensuring factories transition to green fuels is just one part of a broader strategy required to improve air quality in Indore.
By addressing both industrial emissions and vehicular pollution, authorities aim to create a cleaner environment for residents. The administration's proactive approach reflects a commitment to maintaining Indore's reputation as a clean city while tackling emerging environmental challenges.
Efforts to reduce industrial pollution are expected to complement other initiatives aimed at curbing vehicular emissions and managing road dust. These combined actions are crucial for achieving significant improvements in air quality.
The administration's decision marks a significant step towards sustainable industrial practices. The focus on green fuels aligns with global trends aimed at reducing carbon footprints and promoting environmental health.
As Indore continues its journey towards better air quality, the collaboration between local authorities and global alliances like Clean Air Catalyst will be vital. Their combined efforts can drive meaningful change and set an example for other cities facing similar challenges.
The ongoing efforts to monitor and regulate pollution sources will play a critical role in ensuring long-term environmental sustainability. By prioritising green fuels and addressing vehicular emissions, Indore aims to safeguard public health and enhance the overall quality of life for its residents.
