India Advocates for Sincere Dialogue, Skips Signing Swiss Summit Communique

India, on Sunday, opted out of signing a joint communique at a summit in Switzerland aimed at discussing peace in Ukraine, emphasizing its stance that any resolution to the conflict must be mutually acceptable to both Moscow and Kyiv. The summit, held in the Swiss resort of Burgenstock, saw participation from over 100 countries and organizations, with Pavan Kapoor, Secretary West in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), representing India. Notably absent from the invitees was Russia, while China chose not to attend.

India Skips Swiss Summit Signing

India's decision to refrain from associating with any documents or communiques from the summit was grounded in its belief that enduring peace can only be achieved through dialogue and diplomacy that involves both parties to the conflict. Kapoor highlighted India's consistent approach towards facilitating a peaceful resolution through sincere and practical engagement between Moscow and Kyiv.

The Summit on Peace in Ukraine concluded with a joint communique by 83 states and organizations, underscoring a commitment to sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity within internationally recognized borders. Despite not signing this communique, India's participation was aimed at understanding various perspectives and contributing to efforts for a lasting peace in Ukraine.

India has maintained a neutral stance since the onset of the conflict following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has engaged in dialogue with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, advocating for a resolution through diplomacy. At the recent G7 summit in Italy's Apulia, Modi reiterated India's support for a peaceful solution based on dialogue and diplomacy during his meeting with President Zelenskyy.

Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, seeking support for his 10-point peace plan at the summit, emphasized inclusivity and active participation from all parts of the world. India's engagement at the summit and its continued dialogue with global stakeholders reflect its commitment to a human-centric approach and support for peaceful conflict resolution.

The global community's collective desire for a peaceful end to the Ukraine conflict aligns with India's long-standing principle of resolving disputes through diplomatic channels. As discussions continue, India remains dedicated to playing a constructive role in fostering peace and stability in Ukraine.
