In Its First Cabinet Meet Today, NDA Likely To Approve 2 Crore More PMAY-G Houses
The newly-formed NDA government, as part of its first 100-day agenda, is set to approve the construction of 2 crore additional houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana-Gramin (PMAY-G). This initiative will come with an increase in financial assistance per beneficiary, reports Indian Express.
Currently, beneficiaries receive up to Rs 1.2 lakh in the plains and Rs 1.30 lakh in hilly states, difficult areas, and tribal and backward districts under the Integrated Action Plan (IAP). The Centre also plans to increase this assistance by about 50%. This will raise the cost of construction per PMAY-G house to Rs 1.8 lakh in the plains and Rs 2 lakh in hilly areas.

PMAY-G was launched in 2016 with an initial target of 2.95 crore houses all over the country. Of these, 2.61 crore houses have been already built, as per government data.
For plain areas, expenses are shared between the Centre and states in a 60:40 ratio. For northeastern states, two Himalayan states, and Jammu & Kashmir, the ratio is 90:10. The Centre covers 100% of the costs in other Union Territories, including Ladakh.
In the Interim Budget for 2024-25, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the construction of an additional 2 crore houses over the next five years to accommodate the growing number of families. The budget allocation for PMAY-G for the financial year 2024-25 is Rs 54,500.14 crore, consistent with the previous fiscal year's allocation.
"Two crore more houses will be taken up in the next five years to meet the requirement arising from increase in the number of families," she had announced in the Interim Budget 2024-25.
