How Are Hemant Soren, Rahul Gandhi Planning Jharkhand's Election Strategy Post Congress's Haryana Loss?
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren engaged in discussions with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leader Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi The meeting, held at Kharge's residence and attended by Soren's wife, Kalpana Soren, focused on the strategy for the forthcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand, on Wednesday.
As the executive president of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Soren’s dialogue with the Congress leaders signifies the collaborative efforts of the JMM-Congress alliance in gearing up for the electoral contest in the state.

Hemant Soren took to social media to confirm the meeting, stating, "Today in New Delhi, I met Congress President respected Shri @kharge ji and senior Congress leader Shri @RahulGandhi ji and discussed various issues related to the state." This meeting underscores the importance of solidifying the alliance between JMM and Congress, with both parties aiming to finalize a seat-sharing agreement promptly and kickstart their campaign operations. According to reports from PTI, which cited sources knowledgeable about the conversations, the assembly of leaders, which included Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal, deliberated on the electoral readiness for the state polls scheduled later this year.
Congress Allies Show Their Strength
The congregation between Soren and Congress leaders occurred shortly after the Congress party's unexpected loss in the Haryana assembly elections, a development that has stirred reactions among its allies. Notably, the Shiv Sena (UBT) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) criticized the Congress for sidelining its partners. AAP’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh expressed dissatisfaction at a press conference, stating, "We followed the 'Gathbandhan Dharm' and tried for alliance with them to end the BJP's 10 years' misrule in Haryana. But they did not form an alliance and contested independently saying AAP was not a factor in the state."
Additionally, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut pointed out the Congress's selective reliance on its allies, depending on its position of strength in various regions. This sentiment was echoed in an editorial in Saamana, the party's mouthpiece, which attributed the Congress's defeat in Haryana to overconfidence and the arrogance of its local leaders. Both instances underscore the complexities within the opposition's camp, highlighting the need for better coordination and strategy among the allies.
The JMM-Congress alliance’s efforts to strengthen their collaboration come at a crucial time, as they aim to present a united front against the BJP in the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections. The meeting is a step towards consolidating their strategy and resources, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation among opposition parties to challenge the incumbent government effectively. The discussions on seat-sharing and campaign strategies indicate a proactive approach to election planning, with both parties keen on maximizing their electoral prospects.
In conclusion, the meeting between Hemant Soren and the Congress leadership reflects a strategic move to fortify the JMM-Congress alliance ahead of the Jharkhand assembly elections. It highlights the broader challenges faced by opposition parties in maintaining cohesion among allies, as demonstrated by the fallout from the Congress's Haryana election defeat. As the parties focus on their electoral preparations, the outcome of their efforts will be keenly observed in the political landscape of Jharkhand.
