Haryana Assembly Elections Opinion Poll: What's Likely To Have Gone Wrong For BJP? Here's What Exit Polls Say
The ruling BJP is facing a significant setback in the Haryana Assembly Elections, exit polls released on Friday revealed. These surveys suggest a substantial decline from their previous count of 40 seats in 2019.
The BJP encountered numerous challenges leading up to the elections. Anti-incumbency, internal rebellions, and factionalism plagued the party. A major blow came when eight prominent leaders were expelled and chose to run as independents. The most significant crisis was the split with Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janta Party (JJP), which resulted in the collapse of Manohar Lal Khattar's government.

This separation from JJP in March led to a loss of support from Jat voters. The BJP had to focus on consolidating votes from the General category within six months. The Jat community, making up nearly 30% of Haryana's population, likely divided their votes among Dushyant Chautala's JJP, Abhay Chautala's INLD, and Congress. Exit polls indicate that Congress benefited most from this division.
In response to these challenges, Congress capitalised on anti-incumbency sentiments during their campaign. They aimed to secure support from the wrestling community by fielding Olympian Vinesh Phogat from Julana. Exit polls now suggest that Congress's strategy was effective.
Both BJP and JJP suffered after their breakup, with key leaders leaving both parties. Facing an anti-incumbency wave, the BJP adopted a bold strategy by introducing 60 new candidates for the elections.

BJP also faced dissatisfaction among state wrestlers and farmers. Issues like unemployment and confusion over the Agnipath Scheme further complicated matters for them.
Exit polls reveal that BJP may miss out on achieving a hat-trick in Haryana due to these challenges. The party's efforts to regain lost ground seem insufficient against Congress's strategic gains.
However, the results for the 90 seats will be announced on October 8.
