Hariyali Teej 2024: Know Pooja Vidhi, Date, And Time To Celebrate Hariyali Teej Festival
Hariyali Teej is a vibrant festival celebrated in northern India, especially in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. This festival honours the divine union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, symbolising marital bliss and the lush greenery of the monsoon season. As Hariyali Teej 2024 approaches, let's explore its date, time, significance, puja vidhi, and more.
According to legend, Parvati underwent 107 reincarnations before finally marrying Shiva on her 108th birth during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan. In her previous lives, she renounced worldly ties and subsisted on dry leaves in her quest for Shiva's love. To capture his attention, Parvati journeyed to the Himalayas and crafted a Shiva Lingam from sand. Moved by her devotion, Shiva appeared and granted her wish.

Hariyali Teej is typically observed two days before Nag Panchami on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Shravana month. In 2024, it falls on Wednesday, August 7. The timings are as follows: Tritiya tithi begins: 07:52 PM on August 6 Tritiya tithi ends: 10:05 PM on August 7
Significance of Hariyali Teej
This festival holds immense significance for married women who observe a fast for their husbands' long life and well-being. Adorning all 16 traditional ornaments is believed to protect one's spouse from harm. Newlyweds particularly treasure this tradition. Unmarried girls also participate in the festivities, praying for a good husband.
The rituals of Hariyali Teej are deeply rooted in tradition and vary slightly from region to region. Women begin preparations a day before the festival by cleaning their homes and decorating the puja area. They prepare traditional sweets and delicacies as part of the celebration.
Puja Vidhi
On the day of Hariyali Teej, married women observe a day-long fast to seek their husbands' well-being and longevity. Some women opt for a partial fast by consuming fruits and water. Early in the morning, they take a holy bath and wear new green clothes.
A small idol or picture of Goddess Parvati (Gauri) and Lord Shiva (Shankar) is set up for the puja. Women offer fruits, flowers, and sweets to the deities while lighting incense sticks and lamps. They recite prayers and chant mantras dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Celebratory Rituals
An important part of Hariyali Teej is the swinging ritual where swings adorned with flowers are hung from trees. Women take turns swinging on them while singing traditional songs. Applying mehndi is another significant ritual where women gather together to adorn their hands and feet with beautiful designs symbolising prosperity.
The festival also celebrates the monsoon season's lush greenery with women wearing green attire symbolising nature's vibrancy.
As we approach Hariyali Teej 2024 on August 7th, these traditions remind us of devotion's power and nature's beauty during this festive season.
