G7 Summit: PM Modi Departs, No Bilateral Talks Set With Justin Trudeau

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is en route to Italy for the G7 summit. This marks his fifth attendance, making him one of the senior leaders at the event. Despite the possibility of brief interactions with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, there is scheduled bilateral meeting with him.

PM Modi and Trudeau have had limited success in their past encounters. Trudeau's refusal to address the rise of Khalistani terrorism in Canada has strained relations. This issue remains a significant point of contention between the two leaders.

India remains dissatisfied with Trudeau's recent allegations. He accused the Modi government of involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a terrorist, on June 18 in Vancouver. These claims, made in the Canadian parliament on September 18, lack evidence.

Nijjar, having over ten cases registered against him in India, was declared a terrorist. Interpol had issued a red corner notice against him. His connections included Canada-based gangsters like Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Bihla, and Goldy Brar.

Last October, Canada withdrew 41 diplomats from India. This followed New Delhi's request to reduce the number of Canadian diplomats from 62 to 21. Reports suggest some diplomats liaised with Indian political leaders, gathering political intelligence.

The G7 summit will see PM Modi engaging with other global leaders on various issues. However, the strained Indo-Canadian relations are likely to be a backdrop to his interactions. Modi's presence at the summit underscores India's significant role in global discussions.
