Fecal Coliform Levels in Yamuna River Peak at 79 Lakh Units in November 2023

Recent data reveals that the Yamuna river in Delhi continues to face severe pollution challenges. The fecal coliform levels have reached a staggering 79 lakh units per 100 ml MPN at Asgarpur, where the river leaves Delhi. This figure mirrors the peak recorded in October, marking the highest concentration since December 2020, according to the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC).

Yamuna River Fecal Coliform Levels Soar

The permissible limit for fecal coliform, which indicates sewage contamination, is set at 2,500 units per 100 ml by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The last time higher levels were recorded was in December 2020, with concentrations hitting 120 crore units per 100 ml. The DPCC's monthly water quality report, mandated by a National Green Tribunal order, provides these insights.

Water Quality Concerns

At Palla, where the Yamuna enters Delhi, fecal coliform levels were measured at 1,100 units per 100 ml. However, as sewage-laden drains merge into the river downstream, these levels rise significantly. This increase highlights the ongoing challenge of managing sewage discharge into the river.

Dissolved oxygen (DO) levels are crucial for aquatic life. At Palla and Wazirabad, DO levels were within acceptable limits at 6.1 mg/l and 5.2 mg/l respectively. However, these levels dropped to zero at the ISBT bridge and remained at zero until the river exited Delhi. Zero DO levels typically indicate a lifeless river ecosystem.

The report underscores the urgent need for effective measures to address sewage contamination in the Yamuna. The consistent high levels of fecal coliform highlight a persistent issue that requires immediate attention to prevent further ecological damage.

Efforts to improve water quality must focus on reducing sewage inflow and enhancing treatment facilities. Addressing these issues is vital for restoring the health of the Yamuna and ensuring it can support aquatic life once again.
