Farmers' Protest 2.0 Puts BJP And INDIA Bloc To Test Ahead Of 2024 Lok Sabha Polls

Chaos unfolded in the nation calapital as police deployed teargas on protesting farmers as they arrived at the Shambhu border near Ambala. Major roads in the Delhi-NCR region experienced severe traffic disruptions due to erected barricades by authorities. This renewed wave of dissent reignites concerns, casting a long shadow over the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Just three years ago, the nation witnessed year-long protests against the three farm laws enacted by the Modi government, culminating in their eventual repeal in 2021. But with echoes of discontent resurfacing, questions arise: Why are farmers protesting again, and what are the political implications for both the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the opposition INDIA bloc?

Farmer Protests Rock Delhi

While the repeal of the farm laws seemed to have quelled the initial unrest, simmering grievances remain. Farmers allege unfulfilled promises regarding minimum support prices (MSPs) and a lack of comprehensive solutions to address their economic woes. Concerns persist over rising input costs, inadequate storage facilities, and inconsistent market access. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), a prominent farmers' union, has demanded a legal guarantee for MSPs, debt relief, and pension schemes for farmers over 60. These demands, echoing those voiced in the previous protests, have once again drawn thousands onto the streets.

A Litmust Test for BJP

The protests pose a challenge for the saffron party, particularly in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, which contribute significantly to the national agricultural sector and hold considerable electoral weight.

In Punjab, the multi-cornered contest with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) adds further complexity. Haryana, where farmers were actively involved in the earlier protests, could see a repeat scenario, impacting the BJP's aspiration to retain all 10 Lok Sabha seats.

In Uttar Pradesh, with its 80 Lok Sabha seats, is another battleground where the BJP's 2019 performance of 62 seats might be jeopardized by renewed farmer discontent.

However, the BJP is not without its strategies. It plans to leverage its alliance with Dushyant Chautala's Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) in Haryana and hopes to win over farmers through programs like the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana (PM-Kisan) and agricultural infrastructure development initiatives.

Can Discontent Translate into Electoral Gains For INDIA bloc?

The renewed protests present an opportunity for the INDIA bloc, a loose alliance of opposition parties, to revive its fortunes. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been vocal in his criticism of the government's handling of the situation, aiming to regain lost ground in the Hindi heartland, particularly Uttar Pradesh. However, the bloc faces internal divisions, with parties like Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress and Arvind Kejriwal's AAP opting to contest elections solo. This lack of unity could hinder their ability to capitalize on the farmers' concerns.

With just months left until 97 crore voters cast their ballots in the Lok Sabha elections, the opposition alliance faces its last opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Amidst exits by Nitish Kumar's JD(U) and the RLD, the INDIA alliance grapples with internal discord, exacerbated by Mamata Banerjee and Arvind Kejriwal's solo contest decisions.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi utilized social media to criticize PM Modi over the farmer protests, highlighting the party's attempt to rejuvenate its presence in the Hindi heartland.

Despite its dominance in southern states like Karnataka and Telangana, the Congress's lackluster performance in Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh remains a concern. The party's fortunes in these states, especially Uttar Pradesh, where it seeks a reversal of electoral misfortunes, hinge on effectively navigating the farmer protest fallout.
