Expelled Senior Canadian Diplomat Identified As Olivier Sylvestere: Who Is He?
In a significant development that has added to the escalating tensions between India and Canada, the Canadian diplomat expelled by India has been identified as Olivier Sylvestere, who held the position of Chief of the Canadian Intelligence Agency in India.
The diplomatic standoff between India and Canada has been gaining momentum over the past several months. At the heart of the matter is India's displeasure with Canada's perceived inaction regarding the activities of pro-Khalistan elements operating within Canadian borders. These elements have been involved in inciting violence against Indian diplomats, vandalising diplomatic facilities, and making targeted threats against the Indian community in Canada.

India has been consistent in raising its concerns with Canadian authorities, seeking their cooperation in addressing these issues. However, Canada's stance, which often invokes freedom of expression as a defense for the activities of these elements, has been a point of contention.
Expulsion of Olivier Sylvestere
Sylvestere's expulsion comes in the wake of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's recent statement alleging "credible allegations of a potential link" between Indian government agents and the assassination of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June. India has categorically rejected these allegations as baseless and motivated.
The Canadian High Commissioner to India was summoned to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and informed about the decision to expel the senior Canadian diplomat.
The MEA said the decision to expel the Canadian diplomat reflects India's growing concern at the ''interference of Canadian diplomats in our internal matters and their involvement in anti-India activities'' ''The concerned diplomat has been asked to leave India within the next five days,'' it said in a statement.
Earlier in the day, India outrightly rejected as ''baseless'' Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's claim of a ''potential link" between Indian government agents and the killing of Khalistani separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar After Trudeau made the comments in Parliament, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced that a "top Indian diplomat" has been expelled from Canada.
In a statement in Parliament, Trudeau claimed that there were ''credible allegations of a potential link" between Indian government agents and the killing of Nijjar in June In strong reaction, the MEA said the allegations of the Government of India's involvement in any act of violence in Canada are ''absurd and motivated''.
Tit-for-Tat Diplomacy
The expulsion of Sylvestere is being seen as a tit-for-tat response to Canada's action against a senior Indian diplomat. This tit-for-tat diplomacy is a common practice in international relations when one country takes action against a diplomat from another nation. It is intended to send a clear signal that both countries take the matter seriously.
