EVM Whiners Or Sore Losers? Opposition’s Hypocrisy Exposed In Maharashtra

The recently concluded Assembly elections in Maharashtra have once again put the spotlight on the opposition's penchant for crying foul over Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) whenever electoral results don't swing in their favour. A peculiar episode in Markadwadi village, Solapur, where locals planned an illegal "re-election" using ballot papers, has turned into a textbook example of misplaced frustration fanned by political rhetoric.

The planned "re-election," later called off by authorities, stemmed from dissatisfaction among supporters of NCP(SP) MLA Uttamrao Jankar, who lost to BJP's Ram Satpute in Markadwadi, despite winning the overall Malshiras Assembly seat by a margin of over 13,000 votes.

Stirred by doubts about the EVMs, these disgruntled villagers displayed banners announcing a re-poll, only to be met with a firm no from the administration. The local Sub-Divisional Magistrate rightly labeled the move illegal and anti-democratic.

EVM: Congress's Gift Turned Scapegoat

The irony is undeniable. The EVM was introduced by the Congress itself, yet today, it has become their favourite scapegoat. Villagers like Jayesh pointedly questioned the hypocrisy: "These people are challenging democracy itself. Let's not forget, the EVM was introduced by Congress." The opposition's narrative collapses under its weight when one considers that no objections were raised when the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) won the Lok Sabha elections using the same machines.

Markadwadi Speaks: Voters Know Best

The ground reality in Markadwadi tells a different story. BJP's Ram Satpute, despite losing the overall seat, gained considerable traction in the village due to his development work. Villagers like Kaushal cited tangible reasons for Satpute's support, such as his efforts to establish a tourist center and bring significant funds for the region. "Bhau has worked tirelessly, securing a lead of 150 votes," he said.

The Ladki Bahin Yojana, a scheme aimed at empowering women, also played a crucial role in shaping voter sentiment. As Onkar aptly put it, "Even if we switch back to ballot papers, mistakes are possible. The impact of Ladki Bahin Yojana cannot be ignored."

Political Opportunism vs. Grassroots Realities

The opposition's EVM tampering allegations reek of political opportunism. Villagers like Mithun called out the inconsistency: "If there were issues, why didn't they raise them during the Lok Sabha elections? This outcry is anti-constitutional." Indeed, the opposition's selective outrage erodes their credibility, especially when juxtaposed against BJP's focus on grassroots development.

"Devendra Fadnavis, Shinde Saheb, and Ajit Dada's governance has earned plaudits for their corruption-free initiatives and welfare schemes for women". As Adesh Gupta emphasised, "The voter knows their power and they chose Satpute based on his contributions."

No Tampering, Only Transparency

The allegations of tampering fall flat when examined closely. If EVMs were manipulated, as Alok argued, "Why didn't these objections surface during the Lok Sabha elections? When results favour them, it's acceptable. When they don't, they complain." This duplicity underscores the opposition's lack of constructive engagement with voters and over-reliance on conspiracies.

Time to Respect the Mandate

The villagers' plan for a re-poll, though misguided, highlights how easily political narratives can influence public perception. Leaders must refrain from undermining democratic institutions for short-term gains. The people of Markadwadi have spoken-they voted for development, not divisive politics.

As Dinesh wisely noted, "If EVMs were tampered with, our MP candidate would have won. But we've never complained. Unlike others, we respect the mandate." It's time the opposition does the same.

In the end, democracy thrives when all parties respect the process and focus on governance over grievances. The voters have made their choice-let's move forward.
