Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Advocates Long-Term Elephant Conservation Plan Following Recent Deaths

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has emphasised the importance of creating an elephant task force and implementing radio tracking. This initiative aims to prevent further elephant deaths and human attacks. Recently, in the Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, Umaria district, four elephants were found dead on October 29, followed by four more on October 30, and two on October 31. Additionally, an elephant attack resulted in two fatalities and one injury.

Long-Term Plan for Elephant Conservation in MP

The elephants migrating from other states like Chhattisgarh are staying due to favourable conditions in Madhya Pradesh's parks. "They have become an integral part of MP forest activities," Yadav stated. To address this, a comprehensive plan will be developed with insights from states like Karnataka, Kerala, and Assam, which have significant elephant populations.

Elephant Task Force and Long-term Strategy

Yadav announced the formation of an elephant task force to manage these animals safely. Officers will visit other states to learn best practices for managing large elephant populations. The aim is to create a sustainable plan that accommodates elephants while preventing conflicts with humans.

To mitigate man-animal conflicts, solar fencing will be installed around farms to protect crops from elephants. The state will also use radio collars to track solitary elephants that do not travel in herds. This measure is intended to prevent incidents like the recent attack by an aggressive tusker.

Expert Consultation and Accountability

The state government plans to consult wildlife experts to find solutions for preventing incidents like the recent elephant deaths and human attacks. "We are going to seek the advice of wildlife experts for this," Yadav mentioned. This approach aims to ensure a safer coexistence between humans and elephants.

In response to the death of ten elephants, BTR director Gaurav Choudhary and assistant conservator Fateh Singh Ninama were suspended. Their suspension followed a report by a panel including MP junior forest minister Pradeep Ahirwar, additional chief secretary Ashok Baranwal, and head of Forest Force Aseem Shrivastava.

The state is committed to addressing these challenges by implementing effective strategies and learning from other regions with successful elephant management practices. By doing so, they hope to create a harmonious environment for both humans and elephants in Madhya Pradesh.
