A 37-year-old banker from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been kept in isolation at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital after showing suspected Ebola symptoms, with Gujarat health authorities treating this as the state’s first possible case of the disease.

Officials have said the first laboratory report for the patient is negative for Ebola, but confirm that more tests are planned and that discharge will happen only after every sample is cleared by authorised laboratories and all medical checks are completed.

According to health department sources, the man had travelled from Congo to Mumbai and then reached Vadodara airport, where the visit continued for some time before Ebola-like signs, especially high fever, were reported during the stay in Vadodara.

After symptoms were detected in Vadodara, the banker was moved without delay to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, admitted on Wednesday, and placed in a specially earmarked Ebola ward that has strict isolation arrangements and continuous observation by designated medical staff.

The hospital’s dedicated Ebola ward, created for such suspected infections, is following isolation and monitoring protocols, with authorities stating that necessary safety measures are in place for healthcare workers and other patients inside the facility.

Health officials note that this suspected Ebola case in Gujarat has put the state machinery on alert, and the patient will continue to remain under observation until the complete series of tests is finished and all reports confirm the absence of the virus.
