Demonetisation anniversary: Note ban definitely a tragedy for Gandhi family, says Irani
It has been one year since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to the nation that the Rs 500 and 1,000 notes will no longer be legal tender. The decision has received both accolades and brick brats.

The last few days have seen a war of words between the Government and the Opposition. The debates have largely been between former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley.
The government has decided to celebrate November 8 as anti-black money day. The opposition, on the other hand, has decided to observe November 8 as a black day.
Here are the highlights so far:

5.45 pm: Union minister Smriti Irani said that the note ban decision was "definitely a tragedy for the Gandhi family".
5.35 pm: The BJP accused Trinamool Congress workers of attacking its rally here to celebrate the Centre's demonetisation policy, a charge denied by local TMC leaders.
5.25 pm: The Jharkhand unit of the BJP described demonetisation as a 'historic decision' that led to a drop in incidents of naxal violence in the Red Corridor and stone-pelting in Kashmir.
5.23 pm: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar congratulated the Modi government on the first anniversary of demonetisation, calling it an "effective action" against black money. He also hailed the government for launching an "attack" on benami properties.
5.20 pm: The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) took out protest marches in Jammu and Srinagar to mark the first anniversary of demonetisation, which the party observed as 'Black Day' across the country. Scores of party activists assembled at M A Road in Srinagar and Maharaja Hari Singh Park in Jammu. The Congressmen, led by senior leaders, waved black flags and shouted slogans against the Centre denouncing the move.

4.25 pm: This day signifies the resolve of this Government to cure the country from "dreaded disease of black money".
4. 15 pm: Shatrughan Sinha tweeted, "Stop focusing only on elections and defending demonetisation. Start tackling the slow killer demon of pollution. Long term solution imperative."
3.50 pm: Congress party's protest in #Bhopal on one year anniversary of #Demonetisation
3.45 pm: BJP believes that the success of the demonetisation also lies in the surge in the digital payments leading to a less cash society.
3.35 pm: BSP Chief Mayawati accused the Modi government of implementing the demonetisation drive in a "hasty" manner and said that the BJP should observe the day as "demonetisation forgiveness day" instead of "anti-black money day".

12.10 pm: Former Maharashtra chief minister Prithviraj Chavan has demanded a probe by a joint parliamentary committee to ascertain the "real intention" behind the Centre's demonetisation exercise.
11. 55 am: Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has reached Surat. He will be addressing the traders there and will also participate in a protest marking the black day
11. 45 am: According to ANI report, CBI has registered 77 cases & 7 preliminary enquiries during post demonetisation relating to the exchange of demonetised currency in various depts/agencies incl. banks, post offices, railways, insurance companies etc. Amount involved in these cases is around Rs. 395.19 Cr (approx)
