Demolition of 600-Year-Old Chhatri by Kota Development Authority Raises Concerns and Calls for Inquiry
The Kota Development Authority's recent demolition of a 600-year-old Chhatri canopy, linked to the former Bundi royal Rao Surajmal Hada, has ignited controversy. Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has called for an investigation into this matter. The structure, located in Tulsi village on the Kota-Bundi district border, was demolished last Friday to facilitate the expansion of Kota airport.

Villagers expressed their discontent, stating that the site held significant reverence for the Rajput community. They were not informed beforehand about the demolition. Union Tourism Minister Shekhawat criticised the action, questioning whether the authority acted despite knowing its historical significance. "The demolition of the Chhatri of Bundi Naresh Rao SurajmalHada ji is a sad and distressing incident. Did KDA commit this act despite knowing the historical importance of the Chhatri? Investigation and adequate action is necessary in this regard," he posted on X.
Community Outrage Over Demolition
Bharat Singh, a local Rajput community member, shared that the Chhatri was a sacred site for locals, with a fair held every Sunday. The structure was worshipped as a temple on private land, where villagers revered the idol of Rao Surajmal Hada as their deity for centuries. He mentioned that the community believes relocating the Chhatri would have been preferable to its destruction.
Shekhawat emphasised that it was crucial for authorities to respect public sentiment. Meanwhile, attempts to reach Kota Collector Ravindra Goswami for comments were unsuccessful. The Rajput community plans to organise a protest rally in response to the demolition.
The incident highlights tensions between development projects and cultural heritage preservation. The community's call for relocating rather than demolishing underscores their attachment to historical sites. As discussions continue, balancing progress with respect for cultural landmarks remains a challenge.
