Delhi Police Escalate Probe into School Bomb Threats, Engage Russian Firm

In a significant development following a series of hoax bomb threats that sent shockwaves through the Delhi-NCR region, the Delhi Police have initiated international cooperation to track down the perpetrators. Official sources disclosed that the police force has reached out to the Russian email service provider Mail.ru through Interpol to identify the origin of the threatening emails that targeted over 200 schools in the area.

Probe into Delhi School Threats Widens

The police's action comes in the wake of widespread panic caused by bomb threat emails received by numerous schools on Wednesday morning, leading to an immediate suspension of classes and an urgent call for parents to collect their children. The FIR related to this incident reveals that the objective behind these emails was to instigate mass panic and disrupt public peace in the capital city. The case has been filed against unidentified individuals.

Investigators, leveraging social media intelligence, have zeroed in on the email ID [email protected], suspecting the use of a Virtual Private Network (VPN) by the sender to mask their identity. This suspicion arises from a similar incident earlier in 2023, where a south Delhi school received a hoax email from the same service provider, with the sender remaining untraced.

The Delhi Police's approach to Mail.ru via Interpol underscores the complexities of cybercrime investigation, especially when perpetrators employ tactics like VPNs to evade detection. A cyber security expert highlighted the challenges in tracking down individuals who utilize such methods for anonymity.

Despite these challenges, normalcy is gradually returning to the affected schools, with administrations issuing advisories to reassure parents about safety measures and encourage attendance. The Delhi Police's efforts extend beyond international cooperation, involving domestic agencies like IFSO (Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations) and I4C (Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre) in a comprehensive attempt to solve this unsettling case.

The FIR lodged at Special Cell Police Station invokes several sections of the Indian Penal Code, including those related to promoting enmity, criminal intimidation through anonymous communication, and criminal conspiracy. This legal action reflects the seriousness with which authorities are treating the incident, aiming not just to apprehend those responsible but also to prevent similar threats in the future.

As this investigation progresses, it serves as a stark reminder of the evolving nature of threats faced by public institutions and the importance of international collaboration in addressing cybercrime. The involvement of agencies like CBI and Interpol highlights the global dimension of such security challenges and underscores the need for robust mechanisms to protect citizens from digital threats.
