Delhi Government Considers New Bridge Over Yamuna to Address Traffic Congestion Issues

The Delhi government is evaluating a proposal for a new bridge over the Yamuna to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the eastern regions of the city. The initiative aims to improve links between North East, North, and Central Delhi.

The Delhi government is evaluating a proposal to construct a new bridge over the Yamuna near the Signature Bridge or replace the existing Loha Pul. This initiative aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the eastern parts of the city, according to officials.

The proposal was introduced by the Trans-Yamuna Board during a recent meeting with Public Works Department officials. A senior government official mentioned that the plan is still in its early stages and under discussion. "The proposal is at an initial stage. The government is considering it to improve connectivity in the Trans-Yamuna area and enhance links between North East, North and Central Delhi," an official stated.

Traffic Concerns and Future Developments

Officials anticipate increased traffic congestion on the Ring Road, particularly near Sarai Kale Khan, due to upcoming infrastructure developments. The Delhi-Meerut Expressway and Delhi-Dehradun Expressway currently end near Sarai Kale Khan on the Ring Road. Additionally, the DND-Sohna Jewar link of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is expected to open soon.

Given these developments, the government plans to propose a new bridge. However, the exact location has not been finalised and is still under review. The Public Works Department will assess the stretch from Old Wazirabad to Kalindi Kunj for feasibility, traffic congestion, and vehicular movement.

Existing Infrastructure and Future Plans

The Old Iron Bridge, known as Loha Pul, serves as a double-decker bridge with vehicular movement on the lower deck and trains on the upper deck. Currently, there are approximately 25 bridges over the Yamuna, including both road and rail bridges.

The potential new bridge aims to improve connectivity in the Trans-Yamuna area by enhancing links between North East, North, and Central Delhi. This initiative aligns with efforts to accommodate future traffic demands as new expressways become operational.

The proposal remains in its preliminary phase as officials continue discussions on its feasibility. The government is focused on addressing traffic challenges while improving infrastructure in key areas of Delhi.
