Delhi Fog: Nearly 50 Flights, 30 Trains Affected As Coldwave Continues

Nearly 50 flights and 30 trains have been affected as fog-accompanied coldwave conditions continued in Delhi on Tuesday.

The national capital woke up to bone-chilling cold as Delhi recorded 4.8 degrees Celsius temperature at Safdarjung and Palam registered a temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius.

Dense fog spurs travel woes in Delhi

As per the India Meteorological Department (IMD), both Palam (VIDP) and Safdarjung Airports in the city reported visibilities within 500 meters in the morning. The airport officials told by news agency ANI that approximately 30 flights departing from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) were delayed, and 17 flights had to be cancelled due to low visibility caused by dense fog.

"Layer of fog is seen from Punjab to northeast India across Haryana, North MP, UP, Bihar and West Bengal at 0530 hrs IST. The patches of fog are also seen along the east coast of India as shown in the attached Satellite Imagery," the IMD said in a post on X.

"Airports visibility data shows the following visibilities in dense to very dense fog conditions: Varanasi 00m; Agra 00m; Gwalior 00m; Jammu 00m; Pathankot 00m; Chandigarh 00m; Gaya 20m; Prayagraj 50m; Tejpur 50m; Agartala 100m; Vijaywada 100m; Bagdogra 100m," it added.

Like the last few days, the passengers at airports and railway stations were troubled due to the delays.

"My flight was about to depart at 8:40 am but it is now scheduled to depart at 10:30 am...The reason they have given is mainly due to weather & fog...," the news agency quoted a passenger as telling at the IGI airport. The adverse weather had forced the authorities to divert five flights while 100s of flights were delayed.

Here is the list of 30 trains which have been delayed:

Cold waves and fog are expected to persist over the next few days, with the IMD issuing an orange alert for Delhi on Tuesday and Wednesday. The capital city registered a maximum temperature of 19.7°C on Monday.

"An orange alert has been issued for cold wave conditions to continue. We will also continue to see dense to very dense fog in the early hours, which can impact flights, trains and road travel," said Kuldeep Srivastava, scientist at IMD.
