Cyclone Alert For Chennai: IMD Forecasts Severe Cyclone Due to Bay of Bengal Low-Pressure

As South India prepares for the onset of the much-anticipated northeast monsoon, a potential cyclonic threat looms over the Bay of Bengal, ominously nicknamed the "Bay of Sorrows." The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified moderate chance for a cyclone to develop in the next 48-72 hours, influenced by the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in active phase 4. This condition is known to enhance convective activities, raising the possibility of the storm gaining further strength.

The expected path of this system is towards the North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and South Andhra Pradesh coasts, with forecasts predicting it could intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by October 16. It might even make landfall near Chennai the following day. The predictions about the system’s strength and trajectory vary among different models. Some models, including the IMD's Global Forecast System (GFS), indicate rapid escalation into a severe category by October 16, with a potential landfall south of Chennai on October 17.

Various weather models have been analyzing the system's path and intensity as it moves closer to the coast. The TWC meteorologists have observed a well-marked low-pressure area over the central-southern Bay of Bengal since the morning. This system is expected to move west-northwestward, approaching Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu by Thursday and lingering there until Friday. While some models suggest the system could strengthen further, most currently anticipate it reaching Depression status, rather than evolving into a Cyclonic Storm.

In contrast, the European model ECMWF, renowned for its cyclone forecasting accuracy, does not foresee further intensification. It predicts the system, marked as a low-pressure area (LPA), will proceed west-northwestward and cross the South Andhra Pradesh coast without escalating. If the system does intensify, it will be named Cyclone Dana, as per the suggestion from Qatar, following the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) guidelines for cyclone naming.

A red warning, signaling residents to take action, has been issued for Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry for October 16, due to the anticipated cyclonic system. An orange alert, advising people to be prepared, was issued for October 15 and will continue across Tamil Nadu on October 17. Districts within Tamil Nadu, including Tiruvallur, Chennai, and others, along with Puducherry and Karaikal, will be under red alert on October 16, expecting widespread rainfall.

The impending cyclone is predicted to bring widespread light to moderate rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Yanam, and Coastal Andhra Pradesh in the coming days. October 16 is forecasted to experience extremely heavy downpours. With squally weather conditions expected along the coast, winds could reach speeds of 40-50 km/h, gusting up to 60 km/h. Fishermen have been advised against venturing out to sea as moderate to rough sea conditions are anticipated in the southeast, southwest, and central Bay of Bengal until October 17, after which they are expected to gradually subside.
