'Country's Interests Paramount' For Congress In India Versus Canada

After the Indian government declared the charges levelled by Canadian PM Justin Trudeau as 'absurd and motivated', the Congress party went ahead and backed the Indian government on its stand. Jairam Ramesh, MP and INC's General Secretary in-charge communications, tweeted that our country's interests and concerns must be kept paramount at all times.

"The Indian National Congress has always believed that our country's fight against terrorism has to be uncompromising, especially when terrorism threatens India's sovereignty, unity and integrity. Our country's interests and concerns must be kept paramount at all times," he wrote.

Regardless of numerous differences between the government and opposition parties over issues at home, they usually have the government's back when it comes to international matters.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, on Tuesday said that country's security agencies are actively investigating a potential link between the Indian government and the assassination of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar earlier this year.

Addressing the House of Commons in Ottawa, Trudeau stated, "Canadian security agencies have been actively pursuing credible allegations of a potential link between agents of the Government of India and the killing of a Canadian citizen, Hardeep Singh Nijjar."

Reportedly, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, 45, was shot dead outside a Sikh temple on June 18 this year in Surrey, a Vancouver suburb. Nijjar was designated a "terrorist" by India in July 2020 over his support of a Sikh homeland as an independent Khalistani state.

Indian government strongly rejecting the charges levelled by Justin Trudeau, said in a statement by the foreign ministry, "The space given in Canada to a range of illegal activities including murders, human trafficking and organised crime is not new".

As per reports, Canada fired a senior Indian diplomat over the issue. India did the same thing in a counter move.
