Independent MLA Satish Sharma Joins National Conference Government in Jammu Region

Satish Sharma, an Independent MLA, has been appointed to the Omar Abdullah government, representing Jammu. He defeated BJP's Rajeev Sharma by nearly 7,000 votes in the Chhamb seat. His victory pushed Tara Chand, a former Congress heavyweight, to third place. As the only non-BJP winner in Jammu district, where BJP secured ten seats, Sharma's inclusion in the government sparked celebrations in Chhamb.

Satish Sharma Joins NC Government in Jammu

Sharma expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for ensuring Jammu's representation. "I have been blessed by Mata Rani. I thank the people and Omar Abdullah ji for bridging the gap between the two regions and granting the Jammu region more than expected," he stated. This move counters claims that Jammu would lack representation in the government. He highlighted statehood as a major issue needing attention.

Political Background and Family Ties

Satish Sharma hails from a political family. His father, Madan Lal Sharma, was a two-term MP from Jammu-Poonch and served as an MLA from Chhamb and Akhnoor. Satish holds an MBA from the University of Wales and an LLB from the University of Jammu. His uncle, Sham Lal Sharma, is a BJP MLA from Jammu North.

Celebrations erupted with music, fireworks, and sweets in Chhamb following his cabinet induction. Omkar Singh, a Khour resident celebrating the event, remarked, "He is the representative of the whole of Jammu in this government. He is capable to change the fate of this region. We have high hopes from him."

Historical Context of Chhamb Constituency

The Congress party has historically dominated Chhamb, winning seven out of nine elections since 1962 when Chajju Ram first secured it for Congress. Satish Sharma left Congress to contest independently after being denied a ticket. He won against BJP's Rajeev Sharma by 6,929 votes while Tara Chand finished third with 16,449 votes.

Tara Chand previously held the Chhamb seat in 2002 and 2008 but lost to BJP in 2014. He served as Congress Legislature Party leader and deputy chief minister under Mufti Sayeed and Omar Abdullah's governments. The seat was recently de-reserved, prompting his return to contest.

Sharma's supporters believe he can significantly impact Jammu's future through his new role in government. They appreciate Omar Abdullah and NC for including him in the cabinet. This development marks a significant political shift in the region's representation within the state government.
