Congress to Introduce Law Recognizing LGBTQIA+ Civil Unions if Elected
In a significant announcement ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the Congress party has pledged to introduce a law recognizing civil unions for LGBTQIA+ couples, should they secure power at the Centre. This commitment was highlighted in their recently unveiled manifesto, which also touches upon the encouragement of reforms in personal laws, albeit with the consent of the involved communities. This stance emerges as a counterpoint to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) advocacy for a Uniform Civil Code.

The manifesto emphasizes the Congress party's dedication to safeguarding religious and linguistic minorities' rights as enshrined in various articles of the Indian Constitution. Among these rights are the freedom to practice one's faith and the assurance of non-discrimination in education, employment, and other sectors. The document explicitly mentions the party's intention to uphold the fundamental rights of individuals belonging to the LGBTQIA+ community, alongside respecting and promoting the rights of linguistic minorities.
Furthermore, the Congress manifesto outlines plans to bolster educational and economic opportunities for minority communities. This includes restoring and increasing the Maulana Azad Scholarships for overseas studies, ensuring equitable access to institutional credit from banks, and providing fair opportunities in public employment and contracts. The party also vows to address demands for including more languages in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution.
The release of this comprehensive manifesto took place at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, witnessed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge along with former party chiefs Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi. The Lok Sabha elections are set to commence on April 19, spanning seven phases, with vote counting scheduled for June 4.
By proposing these measures, the Congress aims not only to recognize and protect the rights of LGBTQIA+ individuals but also to ensure that all minority communities can fully participate in and benefit from India's socio-economic landscape. This approach underscores a broader vision for an inclusive society where diversity is acknowledged and celebrated.
