Congress Adopts More Leftist Stance to Counter BJP's Divisive Politics, According to Shashi Tharoor

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor recently commented on the party's ideological shift towards a more Leftist stance. He attributed this change to the need to counter the BJP's divisive politics. Tharoor, who spoke on Radical Centrism, clarified that his focus was on ideology rather than practical politics. He noted that tactical adjustments have increasingly been made by the Congress.

Tharoor highlighted that the Congress party has evolved from its earlier centrist approach, particularly during Dr. Manmohan Singh's leadership. During Singh's tenure, the party adopted some policies from the previous BJP government. Tharoor mentioned that between 1991 and 2009, there was a centrist phase which began to shift in recent years.

Shift in Congress Ideology

The Wayanad MP recalled how Congress established several policies in the early 1990s under Prime Minister Narasimha Rao. These policies were later continued by the BJP when they assumed power. Tharoor observed that Congress has become more Leftist in opposition over recent years, though whether this is a tactical or philosophical shift remains uncertain.

Tharoor stressed that his advocacy extends beyond immediate political tactics. He delivered the Jyoti Komireddi Memorial Lecture on Radical Centrism, sharing his vision for India. When asked about contesting for AICC president again, Tharoor expressed reluctance unless circumstances change significantly.

Views on Inner Party Democracy

Tharoor shared his experiences from a previous election, noting they did not encourage him to run again. However, he appreciated Congress's system allowing such contests. He emphasized the importance of inner-party democracy across all political parties in India.

Tharoor also supports term limits for party office-bearers, believing no one should hold office indefinitely. This principle should apply to all parties, he stated.

Comments on Recent Events

Regarding the car blast near Delhi's Red Fort, Tharoor refrained from speculating on government actions but stressed that terrorist acts must be punished. The government has vowed to pursue those responsible, highlighting citizen protection as crucial.

On US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's remarks about skilled overseas workers training Americans before returning home, Tharoor said it depends on implementation. From India's perspective, he supports citizens gaining experience abroad but prefers them returning to contribute domestically.

Tharoor welcomes Indians bringing back expertise and technology to aid national progress. He is open to Americans inviting Indians for temporary work with the expectation of their return to India.
