Delhi Seminar Sheds Light on Empowering Rural Women and Youth

Challenges faced by women and youth in rural India were discussed at a one-day national seminar on Wednesday. The seminar, titled "Women and Youth Empowerment in Rural India," was organised by the African-Asian Rural Development Organization (AARDO) and ChakBal Group. The agenda included critical reflections on the role of education, skill development, technology, and policy in transforming the lives of rural women and youth.

Empowering Rural Women, Youth

Technology's Role in Employment

Rashmi Sinha, Co-Founder of VillageNama, highlighted the importance of technology in addressing employment issues for rural women. She mentioned that schemes like Namo Drone Didi are crucial for tackling unemployment and promoting social inclusion. "Rural women face distinct challenges compared to their urban counterparts, and it is critical that we address these differences through targeted interventions and supportive policies," said Sinha.

Drone Didi Shabina Khatoon shared her experience with drone technology for agricultural transformation. She discussed her journey of becoming a role model in her community and emphasised the need for rural women to embrace technology. Khatoon highlighted how this skill has equipped them to overcome societal barriers.

Economic Empowerment Through Skill Development

Sheela Yadav, a beneficiary of the Lakhpati Didi scheme, spoke about achieving financial independence through skill development and self-help groups. She stressed that economic empowerment is the first step toward social change. Yadav's story exemplifies how targeted initiatives can transform lives by providing necessary skills and opportunities.

Sanjeeb Kumar Behera, Head of the PPP & IEC Division at AARDO, delivered a keynote address focusing on systemic barriers that inhibit the progress of rural women and youth. He underscored the importance of increasing social, political, and financial influence for women in rural areas. Behera pointed out how deeply rooted societal norms from birth create hurdles that limit access to resources and opportunities.

Education and Vocational Training

Prashant Chauhan, Senior Research Fellow at the Public Policy Research Centre, elaborated on the importance of literacy and vocational training in breaking down gender stereotypes. He mentioned successful government initiatives like Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, and Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), which have paved the way for improved access to education and skill development.

Kishan Singh, Head of Solar Project at Bindi International, shared insights on the Solar Mama initiative. This program trains rural women in solar technology, enabling them to lead community electrification projects. Singh's insights highlighted how such initiatives empower women to take charge of their communities' energy needs.

The seminar provided a platform for discussing various strategies to empower rural women and youth through education, technology, and policy interventions. It emphasised the need for targeted efforts to address unique challenges faced by rural populations.
