Centre Responds To Mamata Banerjee's Letter, Says Strict Laws On Crime Against Women Already There
The Union Women and Child Development Minister, Annapurnai, informed the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, to enforce stricter laws and penalties for rape and crimes against women. In her letter, she highlighted the state's failure to operationalize additional Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) for handling rape and POCSO cases, despite a significant backlog.
Devi clarified that the Fast Track Courts (FTCs) set up by the state were distinct from the FTSCs under the central government scheme. She stressed that existing central legislation aimed at combating crimes against women should be implemented effectively to bolster the criminal justice system.

Pending Cases and Legal Distinctions
The minister pointed out that many cases remain unresolved in West Bengal due to the lack of operational FTSCs. She emphasized that these courts are essential for expediting justice in rape and POCSO cases. The distinction between FTCs established by the state and FTSCs under central schemes was also made clear.
This call for action follows the recent rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The incident has led to widespread outrage and protests across the nation, with demands for swift justice for the victim.
Nationwide Outrage
The brutal crime has ignited protests demanding justice for the young doctor. The public's anger underscores the urgent need for effective legal mechanisms to address such heinous acts promptly.
Devi's letter underscores that while central laws are in place, their proper implementation at the state level is crucial. She urged West Bengal's government to take immediate steps to strengthen its legal framework against crimes targeting women.
The minister's appeal aims to ensure that victims receive timely justice through specialized courts designed to handle sensitive cases involving sexual violence and child abuse.
By addressing these issues, Devi hopes to see a more robust criminal justice system in West Bengal that can effectively deter crimes against women and children.
Her letter serves as a reminder of the importance of both state and central governments working together to protect vulnerable populations and uphold justice.
