Irrigation Minister Criticises Centre's Indifference to Flood Problems in Bengal

The West Bengal government has repeatedly urged the Centre to address the ongoing flood issues in the state's northern region, according to Irrigation Minister Manas Bhuniya. On Wednesday, Bhuniya expressed disappointment that the Narendra Modi-led government has not initiated the formation of the Indo-Bhutan River Commission. This commission is seen as crucial for tackling the flood problems caused by rivers originating from Bhutan.

Minister Critiques Centre on Bengal Floods

Seventy-six rivers flow from Bhutan's hills into north Bengal, often leading to flash floods that result in significant casualties and property damage. Bhuniya highlighted that only a river commission with representatives from both India and Bhutan can effectively manage this issue. Despite Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC MPs raising this concern with the Centre multiple times, there seems to be no acknowledgment of the problem.

State Initiatives Amidst Central Inaction

Due to what Bhuniya described as "apathy" from the Centre, West Bengal has initiated its own survey of river basins in north Bengal. The state plans to develop its strategy based on this survey's findings. Bhuniya also accused the state BJP of not collaborating with the West Bengal government for the people's benefit.

In Paschim Medinipur district, Ghatal faces recurrent flooding, yet the Centre has not provided solutions. Consequently, West Bengal has devised an alternative master plan to prevent annual flooding in this area. The Ghatal Master Plan involves dredging riverbeds and reinforcing embankments for at least 10 major rivers in southern West Bengal.

Financial and Administrative Measures

An amount of Rs 341.50 crore has been allocated for excavation work under the Ghatal Master Plan. This extensive project aims to mitigate flood risks by improving river infrastructure. A committee has been established to oversee the Ghatal initiative, with Bhuniya serving as chairman and local MP Dev as a member.

The state government's proactive measures underscore its commitment to addressing flood challenges despite limited support from the Centre. By focusing on local solutions and infrastructure improvements, West Bengal aims to protect its citizens from future flood-related hardships.
