BJP Opts For Sanjay Tandon Over Kiran Kher In Chandigarh Lok Sabha Seat

Kiran Kher, known for her two terms as the BJP's representative in Chandigarh's Lok Sabha, will not be contesting this time. Instead, Sanjay Tandon, a former BJP president of Chandigarh, has been chosen. Kher's national recognition and vocal presence raise questions about the decision to replace her with Tandon, the son of Balram Das Tandon, a former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab.

BJP Opts For Sanjay Tandon Over Kiran Kher In Chandigarh Lok Sabha Seat

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has recently gained traction in Chandigarh, outperforming the BJP in local elections. For instance, during the December 2021 Municipal Corporation elections, AAP secured more seats than the BJP. This shift was significant compared to the 2016 elections where the BJP had a stronger presence. Additionally, a controversy during the Chandigarh Mayor elections in February further tarnished the BJP's image, leading to speculation that changing candidates might be an attempt to recover from these setbacks.

In recent years, there has been a call for local representation over 'outsiders' in political positions. Despite Kiran Kher's decade-long service in Chandigarh and her efforts to integrate into the community, she was still seen as an outsider. This sentiment was echoed by senior BJP leaders and was evident when Kher's name was absent from the list of potential candidates proposed by the local selection committee.

Looking at election results, Kiran Kher has been a strong candidate for the BJP in Chandigarh. In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, she received 42.20% of the votes, significantly more than her competitors from Congress and AAP. Her popularity increased in the 2019 elections where she secured 50.63% of the votes. Despite this success, there seems to be a strategic shift towards local representation with Sanjay Tandon's nomination.

Sanjay Tandon's long tenure as President of Chandigarh BJP from 2010 to 2019 saw the party winning several key elections. His local status and availability are seen as advantages over Kher. Additionally, Tandon's political lineage and his roles within the party at various levels have positioned him as a favorable candidate for Chandigarh's Lok Sabha seat. This decision comes amidst discussions about Kher's health and internal concerns within the party.
