BJP Leader John Barla Confirms Attendance at Mamata Banerjee's Meeting Amid Political Speculation
Former union minister and BJP leader John Barla announced his intention to attend a meeting led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Alipurduar on January 23. This decision has sparked speculation about his potential shift to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). Barla, who was not given a BJP ticket for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, has distanced himself from party activities since then.

Barla's absence from BJP events began after he was overlooked for the upcoming elections. When questioned by reporters about his attendance at the TMC chairperson's meeting at Subhasini Tea Estate ground, Barla stated, "Mamata Banerjee is the guardian of the state. If I have to work for the development of north Bengal, this can be possible under her leadership. See what happens tomorrow."
Political Speculations and Reactions
Barla's recent actions have led to various interpretations regarding his political future. He had previously rejected reconciliation efforts by state leaders like West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar. Majumdar had visited Barla's residence after he withdrew from party activities following the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
In 2019, Barla defeated TMC's Dasarath Tirkey in Alipurduar and was appointed as union minister of state for minority affairs. He had also advocated for creating a separate state from north Bengal, a stance that drew criticism from TMC and was disowned by BJP leadership.
Past Electoral Performance
Barla expressed dissatisfaction with the BJP's performance in recent elections. After the party lost six by-polls, including Madarihat, he remarked that if he had been the MP from Alipurduar, the BJP might not have lost the assembly seat.
When asked about Barla's plans, Sukanta Majumdar commented, "We cannot comment on what he Barla is planning... Let's wait and see before making any comment." This reflects the uncertainty surrounding Barla's next political move.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions within the BJP in West Bengal. Barla's potential alignment with TMC could impact regional politics significantly. His decision to attend Mamata Banerjee's meeting may indicate a shift in allegiance, though nothing is confirmed yet.
