BJP Fields Late Vishnu Savara’s Son Hemant for Palghar Lok Sabha Seat

In a significant development in Maharashtra's political landscape, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has finalized its candidate for the Palghar Lok Sabha seat, marking the completion of its candidate list for the state in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The party has chosen Savara, the progeny of the late Vishnu Savara, a former BJP minister for tribal development who passed away in 2020. This decision comes as part of the BJP's electoral strategy in alliance with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Hemant Savara Nominated for Palghar LS

The Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena UBT has nominated Bharati Kamadi for the same seat, indicating a competitive race ahead. Notably, Rajendra Gavit, the current MP from Palghar who had previously switched allegiances from Congress to BJP and then to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction, has been excluded from the nomination list this time around. Gavit's political journey saw him winning the bye-election for Palghar after joining BJP following the death of sitting MP Chintaman Vanaga in 2018. However, during the 2019 general elections, to mend fences between BJP and Shiv Sena, BJP relinquished the Palghar LS seat to Sena, which re-nominated Gavit.

Following a split in Shiv Sena due to Eknath Shinde's rebellion in June 2023, Gavit aligned himself with Shinde's faction. The distribution of seats among the alliance partners for the upcoming elections sees BJP contesting on 28 seats out of Maharashtra's total 48 Lok Sabha seats, an increase from their 2019 general election count. Shiv Sena is set to contest on 15 seats, NCP on four seats, and one seat has been allocated to NDA ally Rashtriya Samaj Paksha.

On the other side, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition has also finalized its candidates for all contested seats. The Shiv Sena UBT is vying for 21 seats, with Congress aiming for 17 and NCP Sharadchandra Pawar targeting 10 seats. This delineation of candidates sets the stage for a closely watched electoral battle in Maharashtra, reflecting both inter-party dynamics and intra-party shifts that have shaped the state's political discourse over recent years.
