BJD MLA Ramesh Chandra Sai Defects to BJP in Odisha, Signalling Political Shift
In a significant political development in Odisha, Athamallik MLA Ramesh Chandra Sai has defected to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), marking him as the third legislator from the ruling party to make such a move. This transition comes at a crucial time, just ahead of the Lok Sabha and Odisha Assembly elections. Sai's switch to the BJP was formalized in a ceremony attended by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in Katada, Angul district, just a day after his resignation from the BJD was announced.

The departure of Sai from the BJD was precipitated by his non-renomination for the upcoming elections. The party had instead chosen Nalini Kanta Pradhan, a former secretary of the works department, to represent it in the Athamallik assembly segment. Expressing his reasons in a resignation letter addressed to BJD president and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Sai stated, "I was elected from Athamallik in 2019 after winning by a record 47,000 votes. For personal reasons, I am unable to continue in the party."
This is not an isolated incident within the BJD. Earlier instances saw two sitting MLAs - Arabinda Dhali from Jaydev and Premananda Nayak from Telkoi - also defecting to the BJP. Additionally, Parsuram Dhada, a two-time MLA from Soro who left the BJD on April 3 after being denied a ticket, has yet to declare his new political allegiance. His departure led to Madhab Dhada joining the BJD after leaving the BJP last month.
Moreover, two expelled BJD legislators, Pradeep Panigrahy and Prasant Jagdev, have previously joined the BJP ranks. The trend extends to the national level as well, with two BJD MPs - Bhartruhari Mahtab of Cuttack and Anubhav Mohanty of Kendrapara - having already switched sides to join the saffron camp.
The series of defections from the BJD to the BJP underscores a shifting political landscape in Odisha as parties gear up for the forthcoming elections. These moves highlight not only individual political strategies but also broader trends of realignment within the state's political arena.
