Bill Gates Pulls Out Of India AI Impact Summit 2026, No Keynote Address Today

Bill Gates will not deliver his keynote address at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi on Thursday, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation confirmed in a social media statement. The announcement, which came just hours before the event's proceedings, clarified that Gates would step aside "to ensure the focus remains on the AI Summit's key priorities."

Instead, Ankur Vora, President of the foundation's Africa and India offices, will represent the organization and speak later in the day.

The decision marked a change from earlier communications in which the foundation had indicated Gates would attend and address delegates at Bharat Mandapam.

No further explanation was offered, but the timing of the cancellation comes against the backdrop of renewed scrutiny over Gates' past ties to Jeffrey Epstein. Recently released U.S. Department of Justice documents revealed email exchanges between Epstein and Gates Foundation staff, showing repeated meetings after Epstein's prison term. Gates has acknowledged the encounters, insisting they were limited to philanthropy discussions and conceding it was a mistake to engage with Epstein at all.

Gates, who co-founded the foundation in 2000 and serves as its chair, remains closely associated with global health and development initiatives, and his organization is among the world's largest philanthropic funders.

The India AI Impact Summit itself opened with considerable momentum, positioning India as a central player in the global conversation on artificial intelligence. This is the first international AI summit to be hosted in the Global South, a fact that organizers have highlighted as a milestone in broadening the geography of technology leadership. The summit is designed to showcase AI's role in policy, innovation, and large-scale implementation, bringing together diverse stakeholders under one platform.

The scale of the event is striking. Spread across ten arenas covering more than 70,000 square metres, the expo features more than 300 curated exhibition pavilions and live demonstrations. These are organized under three thematic "chakras"-People, Planet, and Progress-each reflecting AI's potential to transform society, sustainability, and economic growth. The summit has drawn participation from global technology companies, startups, academic institutions, research organizations, and multiple levels of government, including Union Ministries and State Governments.

International collaboration is another defining feature. Thirteen country pavilions have been set up, with delegations from Australia, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Serbia, Estonia, Tajikistan, and several African nations. Their presence underscores the summit's ambition to serve as a hub for cross-border dialogue and cooperation in building an inclusive AI ecosystem.

Although Gates' absence from the keynote lineup drew attention, the summit's program continues to highlight a wide range of voices and perspectives. With Ankur Vora stepping in to represent the Gates Foundation, the organization maintains its role in the discussions, particularly around AI's intersection with development and health. For attendees, the focus remains firmly on the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence, and on India's effort to showcase itself as a leader in shaping the technology's global trajectory.

The India AI Impact Summit thus proceeds as a landmark event, not only for India but for the wider Global South, offering a platform where innovation, policy, and international collaboration converge to chart the future of AI.
