Bengal Police Commended by DGP Rajeev Kumar for Effectively Managing Infiltration from Bangladesh

The Director General of Police in West Bengal, Rajeev Kumar, highlighted the role of the Border Security Force (BSF) in managing infiltration from Bangladesh. He noted that despite challenges, the state police have effectively addressed this issue. Kumar praised the professionalism of the police force and assured citizens that they are monitoring the situation in Bangladesh closely.

Bengal Police Praised for Infiltration Control

While speaking to reporters at the state police headquarters, Kumar was joined by Javed Shamim, ADG and IGP of the state intelligence branch, and Manoj Verma, Kolkata's police commissioner. He mentioned that West Bengal Police has a history of successfully dealing with both left- and right-wing extremism. "It's the responsibility of the BSF to look after the issue of infiltration. Despite various challenges, we state police are doing a fine job," Kumar stated.

Border Security Concerns

Kumar expressed concerns about the BSF's handling of border security, pointing out several gaps in their operations. He noted that West Bengal is unique as it shares borders with three countries. "The BSF is responsible for securing the borders, but its operations have several flaws," he remarked. Kumar added that many people have recently crossed into Bengal, but the police are taking action by arresting intruders and handing them over to relevant authorities.

The DGP also highlighted a recent success where the Special Task Force (STF) tracked a Tehreek-e-Mujahideen terrorist hiding in West Bengal for two days before alerting Kashmir Police. "We are quietly doing our work," he said, emphasizing their effective collaboration with other states' police forces.

Political Reactions

West Bengal BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari criticised Kumar's comments on right-wing extremism. Adhikari challenged Kumar to name organisations involved in such activities and accused him of spreading propaganda against nationalist groups. "Mr. DGP @WBPolice; Rajeev Kumar IPS, you have said that your efficient Police Force is combating Right Wing Extremism. I dare you to name the Organizations that are involved in so-called Right Wing Extremism in WB," Adhikari posted on X.

Adhikari further alleged that the state government had not provided land for BSF border fencing, leaving hundreds of kilometres open between India and Bangladesh. He criticised Kumar for not being aware of this issue despite his significant role as an IPS officer and bureaucrat. "Hundreds of kilometres of open border is the primary reason for cross-border infiltration," Adhikari stated.

He announced plans to hold a press conference on Monday to discuss border fencing issues and what he described as a lack of coordination between the police and BSF.

Kumar also mentioned that individuals entering India through Meghalaya's Tura must pass through West Bengal to reach other states. He expressed concern about potential ripple effects from Bangladesh's fragile situation affecting West Bengal.
