Bandh Declared: Jalandhar Shutdown On January 28 Over Ambedkar Statue Vandalism
In response to the vandalism of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar's statue in Amritsar, Punjab, on Republic Day, various organizations have unified to call for a shutdown in Jalandhar on January 28. This decision stems from both the incident in Amritsar and recent protests by Khalistan supporters.
The collective action, led by groups representing the Valmiki and Ravidas communities, aims to express strong condemnation of these disrespectful acts. Notably, the Kabir Tiger Force, based in Jalandhar, is among the key entities advocating for this closure.
Arun Sandal, President of the Sat Guru Kabir Tiger Force, articulated the community's outrage over the attempt to deface the Amritsar monument dedicated to Dr. Ambedkar. Sandal revealed concerns about similar acts of desecration being possible in Jalandhar, emphasizing the need for preventative measures. He remarked, "If the administration did not take action, then a call for Jalandhar bandh was given." This statement underscores the perceived inaction of local authorities as a catalyst for the shutdown.

The bandh, set for Tuesday following the incident, seeks to paralyze normal life in Jalandhar while ensuring that emergency services, including medical facilities, remain unaffected. Sandal's comments, "The rest of Jalandhar will remain completely closed," highlight the expected impact of the bandh on the city's daily operations. Despite discussions with the administration, the lack of satisfactory assurances has propelled the decision to proceed with the shutdown. Sandal warned that failure by the administration to address their concerns could escalate to a Punjab-wide bandh.
Amidst this turmoil, the local administration's perceived reluctance to engage with community leaders has fueled frustration. The bandh not only serves as a protest against the recent acts of vandalism but also as a reminder of the community's expectation for proactive measures to safeguard their cultural heritage. As the situation unfolds, the potential for further action hangs in the balance, contingent on the administration's response to these pressing concerns.
