Are you hit by the heatwave: Here are 8 things you should do

Heatwaves generally occur between March and June and in some rare cases extends up to July as well. During the ongoing conditions, schools in Maharashtra, West Bengal and Odisha remain closed. In the northern states of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab the temperatures have soared, but there has been some respite due to the western disturbances from time to time.

Senior Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist from the Madhukar Rainbow Children's Hospital, Dr Sharwari Dabhade Dua told news agency ANI that a steady rise in temperature and environmental chances has led to very hot and humid summers since the past couple of years. The situation is only getting worse with the coming years, he also said.

Dr. Dua said, our body has the ability to maintain the temperature via dissipation of heat, in the form of perspiration. However, extreme heat and humidity affect this acclimatisation leading to heat stroke."

He went on to add that certain pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity, heart failure, kidney disease and diabetes can cause a higher risk of heat stroke. Children and old age people get affected more. In such cases, adequate hydration with electrolytes like sodium and proper air conditioning is advised to cool the body temperature. Minor symptoms need to be watched before they get severe. Immediate hospitalisation is advised in case of loss of consciousness, chest pain, decreased urination and severe fatigue," he also told ANI.

What do to during a heatwave:

  • Avoid tea, coffee, carbonated soft drinks and alcohol as these can dehydrate the body.
  • Use a hat or umbrella if you are working outside. Also use a damp cloth on your head, neck or face.
  • Do not leave children or pets inside the car.
  • If you are feeling faint or ill, visit a doctor immediately.
  • Have plenty of ORS, lemon water, buttermilk to rehydrate your body.
  • Give animals plenty of water to drink and always keep them in shade.
  • Keep your home cool. Only open windows in the night. Use shades and curtains.
  • Use damp clothing and take a cold water bath frequently. Use the fan judiciously.
