Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting the revocation of the suspension of 13 opposition members. Chowdhury emphasized the need for a fair hearing to address their concerns about the recent Parliament security breach incident.
In the wake of the recent Parliament security breach incident, Congress leader in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, has written a letter to Speaker Om Birla, urging him to revoke the suspension of 13 opposition members. Chowdhury emphasized the need for a fair hearing to allow the suspended MPs to present their concerns and perspectives.

Security Breach in Lok Sabha
On December 13, 2023, two individuals breached the security of the Lok Sabha chamber by jumping in from the visitors' gallery with canisters of yellow smoke. The incident raised serious concerns about the security of the Parliament House Estate, prompting Chowdhury to stress the importance of investigating the matter and taking corrective actions.
Comparison with 2001 Parliament Attack
Chowdhury drew a distinction between the recent security breach and the 2001 Parliament attack, highlighting the differences in the nature of the incidents, the individuals involved, and the intent behind the acts. He emphasized that the recent incident should not be trivialized and that it warrants a thorough investigation.
Opposition's Demand for Explanation
Chowdhury asserted that the opposition members were pressing for an explanation from the government regarding the security breach and other troubling issues. He argued that considering the seriousness of the matter, it is appropriate to hear their concerns and take corrective measures.
Revocation of Suspension
Chowdhury urged Speaker Birla to reconsider the suspension of the 13 opposition members, taking into account the circumstances that led to their unruly conduct. He emphasized the need to restore order in the House while ensuring that members are given a fair opportunity to express their views.
Security Apparatus of Parliament
Chowdhury acknowledged the absolute authority of the Speaker over matters of security in the Parliament House Estate. However, he pointed out that the security apparatus heavily relies on various agencies, including the Delhi Police, Parliament Protection Unit of CRPF, NSG, and intelligence agencies. He cited the example of the 2001 Parliament attack and the subsequent statement made by the then Home Minister, Lal Krishna Advani, highlighting the importance of collective action and solidarity in such situations.
Statement from Home Minister
Chowdhury called for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the recent security breach, considering the sensitivity of the matter. He also suggested reviewing the protocols and procedures for issuing and regulating entry of visitors to the House to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Chowdhury expressed his trust that his letter would be taken seriously and that all sections of the House would be given a fair hearing. He emphasized the collective responsibility of maintaining the dignity and decorum of democratic institutions.
