Greenpeace Report Reveals 77% of Women Feel Unsafe on Delhi Buses After Dark
More than 75% of women feel unsafe travelling on Delhi buses after dark, despite the city's fare-free bus travel scheme issuing over 100 crore pink tickets to women, according to a report. The Riding the Justice Route report by Greenpeace India highlights that while the scheme has provided significant savings for many women, safety concerns remain prevalent.

Greenpeace India's report reveals that 75% of surveyed women have redirected savings from the Pink Ticket scheme towards household needs, emergencies, and healthcare. Additionally, 25% of these women have increased their use of public buses. Since the scheme's launch in October 2019, more women who previously avoided buses have become regular riders.
Safety Concerns and Harassment
Despite these benefits, safety issues persist. The report indicates that 77% of women feel unsafe on buses after dark due to inadequate lighting and infrequent schedules. Overcrowding has also led to incidents of harassment, further exacerbating safety concerns for female commuters.
The Pink Ticket scheme allows women to travel for free on Delhi's public buses, though they can choose to purchase tickets if they wish. Aakiz Farooq, a Greenpeace India campaigner, stated, "This scheme has unlocked public transit for women in Delhi." However, he emphasised the need for expanding the fleet and enhancing safety measures to make public transport accessible for everyone.
Environmental Impact and Future Recommendations
The milestone of 100 crore pink tickets not only supports women's economic and social independence but also contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by promoting public transit over private vehicles. Greenpeace India advocates for a nationwide adoption of fare-free public transport for women and transgender people. They also call for infrastructure improvements to create safer and more sustainable cities across India.
The report underscores the importance of addressing safety concerns to ensure that public transport is a viable option for all. By expanding services and improving connectivity, the scheme could become truly transformative, enhancing accessibility and security for everyone using Delhi's public transport system.
