2024 Total Solar Eclipse Date And Visibility In India: Check Surya Grahan Sutak Kaal Details
Attention all skygazers! Get ready for an extraordinary sight next month as a total solar eclipse is set to grace the skies in the second week of April. Following the world's first Lunar Eclipse of 2024 on March 25, this will be the first Solar Eclipse of the year, also known as Surya Grahan 2024. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the Sun and Earth, partially or completely obscuring the Sun's face.
Surya Grahan 2024: Will it be visible in India?

This event will be visible across North America, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, and other countries. Unfortunately, this rare astronomical phenomenon will not be observable from India.
NASA has highlighted this event on its official website, stating, "On April 8, 2024, a total solar eclipse will cross North America, passing over Mexico, the United States, and Canada."
What is a Total Solar Eclipse?
The moon perfectly aligns between the sun and Earth, casting a deep shadow on our planet. During this brief alignment, the sun's blinding light is blocked, plunging the sky into a breathtaking twilight for a few precious minutes. This, my friends, is a total solar eclipse!
Total solar eclipses
Total solar eclipses can last for several hours, with totality-the phase when the Sun is completely covered by the Moon-ranging from a few seconds to 7.5 minutes. The longest total solar eclipse of the twenty-first century occurred on July 22, 2009, lasting 6 minutes and 39 seconds.
The solar eclipse is scheduled to begin on April 8 at 2:12 pm and conclude at 2:22 am on April 9, spanning approximately twelve hours in total.
"A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk," explained NASA.
2024 Total Solar Eclipse Path: When and Where to See It?
The eclipse will begin its journey over the Pacific Ocean before gracing North America with its presence. Here's the breakdown:
First Totality: Around 11:07 AM PDT, the Pacific coast of Mexico will be the first to experience complete darkness.
Path of Totality: The moon's shadow will then travel northeastward, tracing a path across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and parts of Canada.
Longest Duration: For those lucky enough to be within the path of totality, the eclipse will last between 3 and 4 minutes, with a peak of 4 minutes and 27 seconds near Torreon, Mexico.
Important Safety Note:
It is essential to avoid looking directly at the sun during a solar eclipse, as it can harm your eyes. To safely view the celestial event, be sure to use specialized eye protection for solar viewing.
The next total Solar Eclipse 2024 or Surya Grahan is predicted to occur on August 12, 2026, and will be visible across Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America.
