2024 Sees Retirement Of Key Indian Cricket Legends

2024 was a memorable year for Indian cricket, highlighted by the T20 World Cup victory, but it was also a year of goodbyes. Several celebrated cricketers announced their retirement, leaving a void in the hearts of fans and the Indian cricket team. Among those who hung up their boots, some chose to retire from all forms of international cricket, while others stepped back from specific formats, marking the end of an era for Indian cricket.

Ravichandran Ashwin, a name synonymous with Indian spin bowling, surprised everyone by retiring from international cricket following the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Ashwin, who debuted in 2010, played 106 Tests, 116 ODIs, and 65 T20Is, taking 537, 156, and 72 wickets, respectively. Not just a bowler, he also contributed 3503 runs in Tests, including six centuries and 14 half-centuries. Virat Kohli, another cricketing icon, announced his retirement from T20Is after a stellar performance in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final against South Africa. Kohli, who debuted in T20Is in 2010, played 125 matches, scoring 4188 runs.

Following Kohli, Rohit Sharma also retired from T20Is, ending his tenure as the highest run-scorer in T20I history with 4231 runs from 159 matches. Both Kohli and Sharma, however, will continue to play in Tests and ODIs. Ravindra Jadeja joined the list of retirees from T20Is post the World Cup win, having played 74 matches and taken 54 wickets since his debut in 2009. Jadeja, too, remains active in Tests and ODIs.

Shikhar Dhawan bid farewell to all forms of cricket, including the IPL, in August, after representing India from 2010 to 2022. Dhawan played a key role in India's 2013 ICC Champions Trophy win and accumulated 10,867 runs across formats. Dinesh Karthik, post IPL 2024, retired from international and domestic cricket, as well as the IPL, marking the end of a career that began in 2004 and saw him play 26 Tests, 94 ODIs, and 60 T20Is. Wriddhiman Saha announced his retirement from international and domestic cricket after the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, closing a chapter that included 40 Tests and nine ODIs since 2010.

The retirement of these legends not only marks the end of their illustrious careers but also signals a transition in Indian cricket. Each player, with their unique contributions, has left an indelible mark on the sport, setting high standards for the next generation to follow. The departure of such seasoned players will undoubtedly be felt, but it also opens the door for emerging talents to step up and make their mark on the international stage. As Indian cricket moves forward, the legacy of these players will continue to inspire both fans and aspiring cricketers.
