Jubilee Hills By-Election: Cong To Field Azharuddin As Parties Prepare For High-Stakes Battle

With the Jubilee Hills Assembly seat falling vacant after the demise of sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath, political activity has begun to pick up pace. The by-election, expected to be held by December, is shaping up to be a high-stakes contest for all major parties- Congress, BRS, BJP, and potentially MIM-with social and political equations adding extra weight to the outcome.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Telangana, C Sudarshan Reddy, has confirmed that the Assembly Secretary has formally notified the vacancy through a gazette. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has been informed and preparations are in motion.

The CEO also announced a slew of new reforms aimed at ensuring smoother, more transparent polling. These include cutting down the maximum number of voters per polling station from 1,500 to 1,200, setting up booths within 2 km of voters' residences, and even mobile phone deposit counters outside polling stations. A total of 21 new initiatives have been introduced, covering tech upgrades, voter roll clean-up, BLO training, and enhanced outreach to underrepresented voter groups.

Political Heat Rises

While the formal election schedule is yet to be announced, all three main parties have jumped into campaign mode. The ruling Congress is treating this seat as a key test in Hyderabad, especially since it failed to win any Greater Hyderabad seats in the 2023 Assembly elections-except in the recent cantonment bypoll. Chief Minister Revanth Reddy is leaving no stone unturned, assigning Ministers Ponnam Prabhakar, Thummala Nageswara Rao, and B. Vivek to assess ground realities and strategise for a win.

Adding to the buzz, Congress leader and former cricketer Mohammed Azharuddin has publicly declared his intention to contest the by-election. He pointed out that despite getting the ticket late in the 2023 Assembly elections, he gave a tough fight and lost only by a slim margin. Dismissing rumours about being sidelined, Azhar said he is confident of a win this time and wishes to dedicate the victory to Rahul Gandhi.

However, sources suggest that Revanth Reddy is still weighing his options, taking into account caste dynamics, local sentiment, and the potential impact of an MIM candidate in a Muslim-majority area like Jubilee Hills.

BRS Looks to Regain Lost Ground

The BRS, which lost significant ground in the last elections, is keen to reclaim the seat. The party is reportedly considering fielding a member from the late Maganti Gopinath's family as a tribute and vote-puller. If that doesn't materialise, former MLA Vishnuvardhan Reddy could be their Plan B.

BJP Eyes Opportunity Amid TDP-Jana Sena Support

Meanwhile, the BJP sees an opening in Jubilee Hills and is actively evaluating its chances. With the possibility of TDP and Jana Sena extending support, party leaders are conducting internal surveys to assess the mood of the electorate. Depending on those findings, a final call on whether to contest will be made soon.

MIM Factor and Voter Equations

In a constituency with a significant Muslim voter base, the MIM's decision could prove critical-particularly for Congress. If MIM fields a strong candidate, it might dent Congress's vote bank, further complicating an already tight race.

With the by-election likely in October or December, all eyes are now on how the political chessboard will evolve in Jubilee Hills. While the official dates are awaited, the battle lines are already being drawn-making this one of the most closely watched electoral contests in Telangana's capital.
