Hyderabad is implementing an electric mobility plan, with the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation aiming to introduce 2,800 electric buses by 2027, partly through retrofitting existing diesel buses; tenders were awarded in September 2025 to Sai Green Mobility and Kalyani Powertrain Limited. The infrastructure development, including 10 new depots and charging stations, is estimated to cost around Rs 392 crore.

In a major push towards cleaner commuting, the corporation has outlined a roadmap to induct thousands of electric buses in the city over the next two years, relying partly on retrofitting existing diesel vehicles.

Retrofitting Diesel Fleet To Drive Electric Shift

In an official statement, TGSRTC said it is converting its existing diesel buses into electric vehicles through a structured retrofitting process. The move is part of a broader effort to curb urban air pollution and encourage sustainable public transport usage across Hyderabad.

Tenders for the project were floated on September 15, 2025, and the process concluded on September 30, 2025. Contracts have been awarded to Sai Green Mobility for retrofitting 200 buses and to Kalyani Powertrain Limited for converting 40 buses.

The corporation's larger target is to deploy 2,800 electric buses within the Hyderabad Outer Ring Road limits by 2027. Officials believe that greater adoption of public transport and reduced dependence on private vehicles will play a key role in bringing down emission levels and improving public health indicators.

Current Fleet And Upcoming Inductions

At present, 325 electric buses are already operating from six city depots. TGSRTC plans to induct another 175 electric buses during the current financial year, further strengthening the fleet.

The expansion is not limited to vehicles alone. Charging facilities are being developed at 19 additional depots to ensure seamless operations as the electric fleet grows.

Infrastructure Expansion Worth Rs 392 Crore

To support the long term transition, the corporation is planning the construction of 10 new depots along with 10 dedicated charging stations. The proposed infrastructure development is estimated to cost around Rs 392 crore, according to the statement.

The release also recalled that in 2023, a diesel bus from the Mushirabad depot was successfully converted into an electric bus in collaboration with a private firm. The vehicle is currently operating under the Uppal depot, serving as an early example of the retrofitting model now being scaled up.

TGSRTC Managing Director Y Nagi Reddy stated that the initiative is aimed at strengthening Hyderabad's public transport system while promoting sustainable mobility.

Senior officials and representatives from the participating firms attended a meeting at Bus Bhavan to review and take forward the initiative, the statement added.
