Hyderabad Metro Fares To Increase By 30%: Key Details For Daily Commuters
Hyderabad Metro Rail is set to increase its ticket prices by 25% to 30% starting May 10, following a proposal that awaits final approval from Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The fare hike comes amid mounting operational losses and a significant increase in passenger demand, particularly during the summer months when commuters are turning to the metro for its air-conditioned travel and relief from traffic congestion.
New Hyderabad Metro Fare Structure
As per the revised fare plan:
- Minimum fare will remain ₹15
- Maximum fare may go up to ₹75

The price revision is based on recommendations by the Fare Fixation Committee (FFC), constituted by the central government two years ago. The proposal will be formally presented to CM Revanth Reddy on May 8, with the new fare structure expected to be implemented from May 10, pending government approval.
Hyderabad Metro Struggling with Financial Losses
Since its launch, the Hyderabad Metro Rail, operated by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, has been operating at a financial deficit. Officials argue that the metro fare hike is essential to cover rising operational costs and sustain quality service.
The first phase of the Hyderabad Metro project was completed in November 2017, covering 69.2 kilometers across major corridors:
- Miyapur-LB Nagar
- Nagole-Rayadurgam
- JBS-MGBS
Metro Usage Increases Amid Summer Heat
Currently, the metro operates 1,200 trips daily, catering to around 4.80 lakh passengers on weekdays. On weekends and public holidays, this number climbs to over 5.10 lakh, as more people shift from RTC buses and private vehicles to the Hyderabad Metro for its comfort and efficiency during the scorching summer.
Metro Officials Confident About Fare Hike Approval
Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities are confident that the Telangana state government will approve the revised fare structure. According to metro officials, discussions have already taken place with the government, and the fare revision is being viewed as a necessary move to maintain infrastructure, ensure long-term sustainability, and continue providing efficient urban transport to Hyderabad's growing population.
