The AI Arms Race: Who Will Dominate The Future Of Technology?

The world's biggest technology firms have locked horns in the arena of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The race is to develop and deploy the most advanced AI models. Trillions of dollars are up for grabs, and stakes are high, with the potential for immense economic and geopolitical gains.

Recent data released by leading AI companies reveals a surge in usage of their generative AI tools, highlighting the growing demand for these technologies. The demand is growing, and the tech giants are trying to extract maximum mileage. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has reported a significant increase in active monthly users, reaching 200 million. The company's CEO, Sam Altman, is positioning itself as the clear market leader. In a recent post, he announced that ChatGPT is used by 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies.

The AI Arms Race Who Will Dominate The Future Of Technology

Microsoft, which has integrated OpenAI's technology into its own AI tools, shared robust growth figures. The tech behemoth reported a 60% increase in business customer usage of its Copilot chatbot in just three months. The tech giant also announced that web users have generated over 12 billion images and conducted 13 billion chats using Copilot to date. The numbers have been soaring by 150% since the beginning of the calendar year. The demand and dependence on AI are clearly on the rise.

A NEW ERA OF TECHNOLOGICAL SUPREMACY

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is also reporting a huge surge in its user base. Its flagship AI offering, Llama models is approaching 350 million downloads. Meta says they were downloaded more than 20 million times in the last month alone.

The cloud service providers have doubled between May and July, coinciding with the release of Llama's latest update

Mark Zuckerberg, the company's founder, and CEO, took to Threads to share his enthusiasm, saying that AI adoption is "growing rapidly, and we've yet to launch in the UK, Brazil, or EU".

Besides, Meta and Microsoft, Google is also making deep forays in the AI battlefield. Google, which had developed many of generative AI's foundational capabilities, has faced criticism for lagging behind its competitors in deployment. The U.S.-based firm suffered setbacks during the rollout of AI tools. However, the search engine giant is making strides to catch up. Last month, Google announced the integration of its Gemini chatbot across all its products, including Gmail and Google Maps. Unlike ChatGPT and Claude, Gemini is connected to the internet and the bot can give real-time updates. However, Gemini doesn't reply to sensitive questions like elections due to various complaints of providing inaccurate responses.

There is a lot of money to be made also. The AI market is expected to experience significant growth in the coming years. According to a report by McKinsey Global Institute, AI could contribute up to $13 trillion to the global economy by 2030. But to continue the surge AI firms need to address some fundamental problems. Various governments around the world are trying to make legal frameworks to govern the AI industry. Again, there are ethical issues such as bias, privacy, and job displacement are among the key concerns that need to be addressed.
