Sujay Kapur Property Dispute: Karisma's Kids Call Priya Sachdev 'Cinderella Stepmom' In Court

A bitter legal feud over the Rs 30,000 crore estate of late businessman Sunjay Kapur unfolded dramatically in the Delhi High Court on Friday, where senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing the children of actor Karisma Kapoor, likened Priya Sachdev Kapur-Sunjay's third wife-to the infamous antagonist of a childhood fairytale.

"This is a Cinderella stepmother," Jethmalani declared, accusing Priya of attempting to marginalize the inheritance rights of Karisma Kapoor's children, according to a report in News18.

In the Delhi High Court, senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, representing Karisma Kapoor's children, alleged that Priya Sachdev Kapur, Sunjay Kapur's third wife, attempted to deprive the children of their inheritance from the Rs 30,000 crore estate; the children are contesting a will dated March 21, 2025, which purportedly gives Priya all of Sunjay's personal assets.

Jethmalani argued that Priya Sachdev had already secured a dominant share of the estate, stating, "Who is really greedy? She has already got 60% of the assets, around 12% to her own son, and 75% of the trust. She was in such a hurry, she even started writing letters about Benami forms, which are used to decide beneficiaries of companies."

He described Priya's actions as a "glaring hurry," suggesting they were calculated to deprive Sunjay Kapur's children from his previous marriage of their rightful share. The advocate also cast doubt on the authenticity of the will, questioning its legal foundation: "It is not possible that Sunjay Kapur would not have consulted an advocate before creating a will and bequeathing such a large estate."

When asked by the court whether the will was typed, Jethmalani confirmed it was, and pointed to multiple "loopholes and infirmities" in the document. "This is not a normal case. There's no reason why the executor wasn't informed or why a lawyer wasn't consulted. A genuine will by a well-positioned man in society does not suffer from loopholes and infirmities," he argued.

Further allegations included claims that the will was altered while Sunjay Kapur was vacationing with his son, and that the individual responsible for the changes was appointed director of one of Kapur's companies just a day after his funeral.

Jethmalani emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is a case where the entire justice system is being taken for a joke," and reminded the court that forging a will is a criminal offence punishable by life imprisonment.

The suit, filed by Karisma Kapoor's children-Samaira and Kiaan-seeks a fair division of their late father's personal estate. Represented by their mother, the children allege that Priya Kapur fabricated the will to gain exclusive control of the assets following Sunjay Kapur's death from a heart attack during a polo match in London earlier this June.

Named in the lawsuit are Priya Kapur, her son, Sunjay's mother Rani Kapur, and the purported executor of the will, Shradha Suri Marwah. Central to the dispute is a will dated March 21, 2025, which allegedly bequeaths the entirety of Sunjay Kapur's personal estate to Priya. The children claim that Priya, along with associates Dinesh Agarwal and Nitin Sharma, concealed the will for over seven weeks before revealing it during a family meeting in July.
