Say No, And Walk Away: Sunny Leone Amid Sexual Assault, Casting Couch Allegations In Film Industry

Former adult actress Sunny Leone has spoken about allegations of sexual assault, rape, and casting couch practices in the film industry following the release of the Hema Committee report on the Malayalam film industry.

During a promotional event in Kochi for her upcoming movie 'Petta Rap,' the Bollywood actress spoke out on the issue, stating, "I can only speak from my own experience. I haven't faced the kinds of harassment that others are currently talking about. I believe in my own identity and my work. If I feel I deserve more remuneration or anything else from a film, I speak up for it. I believe everyone should do the same."

She further emphasized the importance of personal agency, saying, "As women and young people, we will have opportunities to make decisions. We should choose what we believe is right, say no, and walk away from what we think is wrong. Many doors have been closed in front of me, but it hasn't been a problem for me. If one opportunity is lost, a hundred more will come our way."

The release of the Hema Committee report has prompted several women to come forward with allegations of sexual assault, rape, and exploitation within the Malayalam film industry. The Hema Committee, established after a 2017 actress assault case, was tasked with investigating gender discrimination and harassment in Malayalam cinema. In 2019, the committee submitted a 300-page report to Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, shedding light on the industry's deep-seated issues.

The report reveals that women in the film industry often feel unsafe and are subjected to sexual demands in exchange for job opportunities-a stark contrast to other professions where skills and interviews typically determine employment. The industry is described as a "male-dominated Boys' Club," where discussions often devolve into vulgar jokes and sexual innuendos. The report also highlights a pervasive "culture of silence" maintained by a power nexus that controls the industry.

Despite the widespread nature of sexual harassment and abuse, many women in the film industry remain hesitant to report these offenses, largely due to fear of retaliation and the potential consequences of challenging the entrenched power structures.
