Indian Government Refuses Release Of ‘Abir Gulaal’ Starring Fawad Khan
Abir Gulaal, a Bollywood film starring Indian actress Vaani Kapoor and Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, would not be released in India, according to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting sources. The decision follows the horrific terror incident in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of one Kashmiri civilian and twenty-five visitors. The event has increased opposition to the film's distribution by igniting enormous grief and indignation across the country.
Abir Gulaal, which was originally slated to premiere on May 9, was produced by Vivek B. Agrawal and directed by Aarti S. Bagdi. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, strongly objected to the film's screening, causing early protests. In support of its position, the party pointed to the tense relations between Islamabad and New Delhi. According to MNS leader Ameya Khopkar, "No film featuring Pakistani artists will be released here," reaffirming the party's pledge to block the movie. I'm putting it out there."

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE), which represents more than five lakh members from 32 film-related organizations, issued a new mandate to boycott all Pakistani actors and actresses in Indian cinema, further escalating the situation. In response to the Pahalgam tragedy, the organization reiterated its 2019 position following the Pulwama incident that claimed the lives of 35 paramilitary personnel: Abir Gulaal must not be permitted to screen. In a statement, FWICE announced that "all Pakistani singers, artists, and technicians working on Indian entertainment projects will be subject to a blanket boycott."
According to ministry sources, a number of movie theater chains refused to show the movie, and a number of trade associations called for a boycott. As a result, the government decided against approving the movie's Indian release.

"Deeply saddened to hear the news of the heinous attack in Pahalgam," Fawad Khan wrote on Instagram in response to the fatalities in Pahalgam. During this trying time, our prayers and thoughts are with the victims and their families.
Long-standing efforts to bar Pakistani performers from India's entertainment industry have been rekindled by the occurrence. A similar ban on Pakistani performers was imposed in 2016 following the terror incident in Uri that claimed the lives of 19 Indian soldiers. The outcry affected Fawad Khan, who starred in Karan Johar's Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. As a result, the director apologized publicly and promised not to work with Pakistani artists again. In a similar vein, Mahira Khan's Pakistani heritage presented challenges for Shah Rukh Khan's 2017 movie Raees.
With hashtags like #BoycottAbirGulaal spreading on social media, the recent Pahalgam tragedy has sparked nationalist feelings once more. Growing political and public pressure has essentially prevented the movie from showing in Indian theaters, despite the original plans for a statewide release.
